The rain had stopped by the time Elena reached the boathouse, but the boards were dark and slick underfoot, and she took the last few steps carefully, one hand pressed to the wall. Inside, the smell was of old rope and older water. She stood in the doorway for a moment, letting her eyes find the shape of the thing before she named it.
It was smaller than she remembered. Everything from that year had been smaller when she came back to it — the house on Marley Street, the pond behind the school, her father's study with its single window facing the drive. As if the world had been rebuilt at nine-tenths scale while she was away, and no one had thought to tell her.
